Xbox System Link Compatible Games

This is a list of original Xbox games that are compatible with the System Link feature, both released and unreleased. Platinum Hits releases may not system link with non-platinum hits releases due to some Platinum Hits releases having 'Title Updates' that will not link with older versions, and some games will not link with non updated versions if they have 'Title Updates' applied, either through XBL or a softmod. For Xbox 360 games, see List of Xbox 360 System Link games. Some games allow more players if one Xbox acts as a Dedicated Server. A Dedicated Server means one of the Xbox's hosts the others and you can't play on the host Xbox.

This is just another example of the Xbox team's commitment to legacy content. We already know that the Xbox Series X adds HDR to backwards compatible games, and that four generations of games are supported on the new hardware generation.

Based on the Wiki page listing all System Link compatible games, it looks like the maximum number of consoles that could be linked varies from game to game. The maximum number of consoles able to be linked appears to be Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, at 32 consoles.

XLink Kai is a multi-platform and peer-to-peer LAN tunneling service which enables users to play system-link / LAN and ad-hoc multiplayer games on their consoles online with people all over the world. XLink Kai was first released in 2003, supporting the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube at launch, with PSP, PS3, Xbox 360 and others support arriving soon after. Thanks to the backwards compatibility mode on the Xbox One you can play Original Xbox games on XLink Kai with other players on Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S!

Since the xbox one does not have an ethernet link light you will have to rely on the device on the other end of the cable to check the link status. Power on your Xbox One and connect your ethernet cable.

This lines up with Microsoft's push for Xbox backward compatibility and Xbox Game Pass, as more games are added to the growing online library or use Xbox cloud save transfers. The video also shows the potential for cross-gen multiplayer gameplay. Players will be able to play some of their favorite games across all four consoles as they would with any modern game. It opens the door for bringing in more Xbox games from the original console to be backward compatible for all Xbox consoles.

Like the Xbox, the Xbox 360 allows players to play system link via wired Ethernet or a wireless adapter (such as the Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter in an access point-based or mesh network). To hook up four Xbox 360's together, one would need special linking adapters. Additionally, some Xbox Live titles like Halo 3 can play a match with players connected over Xbox Live and on the same LAN. By allowing multiplayer games over the same LAN, System Link has led to the formation of private and public LAN parties.

The following 139 games support play over system link, and therefore are able to be played online via XLink Kai, XBSlink, or XLAN. Note that these games can also be played on the Xbox 360 if the game is compatible with the Xbox 360.

With the Xbox One, Microsoft focused a lot on backward compatibility and bringing a number of games from previous generations forward. That same focus remains in the new generation, but today we're learning that it applies to more than just games. As it turns out, the Xbox Series XS are capable of connecting to other Xbox consoles across generations to play games over system link.

While there isn't a whole lot of need for a feature like system link in the age of internet-connected gaming, back in the days of the OG Xbox it was a handy feature to play local multiplayer games outside of split screen. Perhaps the most notable title to support system link was Halo: Combat Evolved, which allowed for as many as 16 players spread across four consoles.

System link might be a relic of the past, but it's not a dead feature in the Xbox family. As MVG reports in a new video (which you can see embedded above), system link is still alive and well the in the latest consoles from Microsoft, as an Xbox Series S can connect to an original Xbox and play system link games.

Microsoft has announced the initial list of Xbox games which will be compatible with the Xbox 360 when the new console launches later this month, with over 200 of the existing console's titles to be supported from the outset.

According to Microsoft corporate VP Todd Holmdahl, the firm's goal "remains to make as many games backward compatible as possible" - with the current figure of 212 titles representing under a quarter of all titles released for the Xbox to date in North America. 2ff7e9595c
